What Can I Do To Learn About The Oceans???

We have been talking a lot about Oceans this month, maybe it is because Summer is here.......

How can we learn more about the Worlds Oceans???

Everyone on our planet is connected and affected by the oceans; the world's ocean covers 70% of our planet, yet less than 1% of our ocean habitat is protected. The ocean plays a critical role in maintaining the planet's ecosystems and is essential to human health and well being.

It is critical to educate the public, and promote stewardship among children and adults alike; ocean environments around the world are collapsing, primarily due to over-fishing, pollution, and unsustainable coastal development.

One Way to Learn More is to Visit Your Local Aquarium!!!

Oceans Are important for many reasons, they are more than just fun and beautiful. One half of the U.S. population lives in the coastal zone. One in every six jobs is marine-related.

The world's ocean:

  • Generates most of the oxygen we breathe

  • Helps feed us

  • Regulates our climate

  • Cleans the water we drink

  • Offers us a pharmacopoeia of potential medicines

  • Provides limitless inspiration!

Help Protect the Oceans!!!

All life on earth depends on the oceans. Did you know oceans regulate the climate, generate oxygen, provide a livelihood for hundreds of millions of people, and are home to the biggest animal that ever lived? Yet they are threatened by climate change, pollution, unsustainable fishing practices, and more.

  • Reduce the amount of trash you produce and plastic you use, and recycle as much as you can. According to the United National Environment Programme, "Marine litter (or debris) is one of the most pervasive and potentially solvable pollution problems plaguing the world’s ocean and waterways."

  • Shrink your carbon footprint. Change some habits at home, school, work, on the road, and in the air to reduce your use of fossil fuels.

  • Eliminate the use of pesticides and fertilizers on your lawns and gardens, and choose organic food. Harmful chemicals that go into the soil eventually end up in the ocean.

Recycle Your Shoes!!!

If you have shoes that you just do not like or no longer fit you, think about recycling them. There are many different ways to recycle your shoes depending on the condition. Below you will find a list of different ways to recycle your shoes old or new!!!

1. Freecycle: Freecycle is a great local organization where neighbors share discards and items they no longer need. Visit the freecycle website for more details.

2. Donate to a homeless shelter: Granted, it might not be practical to donate your red, rhinestone-encrusted strappy sandals, but there are people who will appreciate receiving your old sneaker or hiking boots.

3. Nike’s Reuse a Shoe program - Nike has a program where old athletic shoes are recycled to make playground material and sports services.

4. Shoes in pristine condition can be sold at consignment stores.

5. Older shoes can be donated to thrift shops. Most thrift shops donate proceeds to charity.

6. Have a shoe swap with friends.

7. Check your local recycle center. They may have a shoe recycling program.

8. Donate your shoes to Eco Cycle - A recycling program where your shoes will be given to someone who needs them.

9. Donate your old Kenneth Cole shoes and receive 20% off on a new pair.

10. Contact Souls 4 Souls to see how to recycle or donate your used shoes.

Top Household Products to Avoid!!!

Here are some items you should avoid buying and using in your home. Some of these items not only hurt the Earth, they could also be harmful to your family!

  • Styrofoam is not biodegradable, which means it's here forever.

  • Many household cleaning products contain hazardous ingredients. Rather than purchasing products with scary warning labels, try to buy natural cleaners.

  • PVC plastic, the least recycled plastic, is mainly used in construction. But it can also be found in everyday plastics, including children's toys.
