Happy Halloween................

Halloween History....

Halloween is a secular celebration based on ancient Druid customs, dating back to 700 B.C. The Druids, a Celtic religious order in ancient Britain, Ireland and France, believed that the souls of the dead returned to mingle with the living on 'hallowed eve,' October 31. People originally dressed in costumes to disguise themselves from these spirits.

Halloween first was celebrated in the United States in the 1840s, when Irish Catholics, fleeing from the potato famine, brought Halloween customs with them to America.

The tradition of carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns originated with Irish children who first carved out the centers of turnips and placed candles inside.

Carve A Pumpkin Day.............

Carve a Pumpkin Day is observed on October 31, 2013. Pumpkins are commonly carved into decorative lanterns called jack-o'-lanterns for the Halloween season in North America. The practice of craving pumpkins for Halloween orginated from an Irish myth about a man name "Stingy Jack". In the United States, the carved pumpkin was first associated with the harvest season in general, long before it became an emblem of Halloween.

October 19th........Sweetest Day.............

Date When Celebrated: Third Saturday in October
Now here is a day dedicated just for your sweetie. It exists as an opportunity for you to recognize that sweet and special someone. It doesn’t matter who that person is, or what their relation to you. They just have to be "sweet" in order to get a little recognition.

Herbert Birch Kingston, a Cleveland, Ohio philanthropist and candy company employee started Sweetest Day. He wanted to bring happiness to orphans, shut-ins and under-privileged. His intent was to show these people that they were not forgotten.  In 1922, he started this holiday by giving candy and small gifts. He often used movie stars to distribute the gifts.

The popularity of this holiday quickly spread. Today,  it is celebrated with loved ones and friends. However, we encourage you to follow the intent of the original holiday, and find ways to give candy and small gifts to those in need.

Autumn Eco Tips 2.................

  • If you have a ceiling fan, reverse the direction ... the fan should be run in a clockwise direction (stand under the fan and if you feel a breeze, reverse the direction so that air is being drawn upwards). This pushes the air up against the ceiling and down the walls, to gently re-circulate the warm air without creating a cooling "wind chill effect."
  • Do you have a fireplace? This is a good time to have the chimney cleaned and get vent systems checked.

Autumn Eco Tips 1........

  • If you have them remove window air conditioners for the winter. If they can't be removed, seal them with caulking or tape and cover them with an airtight, insulated jacket.
  • Clean and test the furnace. Did you know that your furnace needs cleaning? It collects dust and debris which not only affects it's performance but could cause a fire. If you have a gas furnace, have it professionally inspected once a year.
  • Install a programmable thermostat and set it for 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 Celsius) ... it'll save money and use less fuel/electricity.
